Frequently Asked Questions

By sharing the Child Shield, U.S.A.™ educational materials with your children you can dramatically reduced their risks of ever becoming lost or missing. Even though we hope and trust that you will never need to call on us to help find your child, it pays to be prepared. Here are the eight most commonly asked questions about the recovery portion of the Child Shield, U.S.A.™ program.

How long is the Videotape Registration Service good for? The service is valid for two years. At our suggested retail price, you can safeguard your child for just a nickel a day. That's only about one one-hundredth of what you pay to insure your car. (And, your car can be replaced if it's stolen.)

Who shoots the videotape? The service is designed to permit parents to shoot their own child's Identification Videotape. One of the key elements that makes parents comfortable with Child Shield, U.S.A.™ is the security that comes with knowing that no 'stranger" will be videotaping their child. The Child Shield, U.S.A.™ Videotape Registration Service Kit comes with complete instructions that will teach you how to properly shoot your child's identification videotape in the privacy of your own home, using any camcorder. (No camcorder? No Problem! Everybody has at least one friend or relative who would gladly lend their camcorder for something this important.)

How many children can be put on the tape? Only one child per tape, please. Each tape is given its own secret ID number which corresponds to the child whose image is on that tape. This eliminates any risk that a wrong child's video could ever be duplicated and distributed.

Does Child Shield, U.S.A.™ actually store and protect the videotape for two years at no additional cost? Yes. The Child Shield, U.S.A.™ program includes protective storage of children's videotapes to ensure an immediate response whenever a child becomes lost or missing. To further ensure security, the exact storage location of the videotapes is known only to Child Shield's Executive Officers, its Insurance Company, and the Chief Legal Counselor for the law firm which represents Child Shield, U.S.A.™

Will I feel comfortable having Child Shield, U.S.A. safeguard my child's video? Absolutely! Child Shield, U.S.A.™ does not receive or store data or information on any child. Each child's videotape is identified by a Secret Code Number, known only to the parents. We have no way of knowing the identity of any registered child unless the parents report the child missing. Even if it were possible for someone to locate and gain access to our storage facilities, it would in no way jeopardize the welfare of any of the children whose videotapes are stored there. With only the secret code number to go on, one would have to search every home in America to find any Child Shield-registered child. Even so, we still have in place appropriate security measure to prevent unauthorized access and to safeguard the tapes from other hazards such as fire or flooding. (Frankly, you put your children in far more jeopardy every time you have a role of film developed. Not only does everyone who works for the store and the film lab have access to you children's pictures, they have your name, address and phone number, too.)

Is there any other program like Child Shield, U.S.A.™? No. Child Shield, U.S.A.™ is the only service of its kind.

What about Blockbuster Video? Don't they offer some sort of child-safety video program? Yes, but the Blockbuster program offers parents NONE of the services provided by Child Shield, U.S.A.™ Blockbuster does not duplicate videotapes, nor do they distribute videotapes if a child becomes missing. All Blockbuster does for parents is what Child Shield, U.S.A.™ suggests that parents do for themselves - shoot the videotapes of the child. With the Blockbuster program, the parents can only have the tape shot on weekends during the month of August, and then they must fend for themselves to find the knowledge, the money, and the facilities necessary to reproduce and distribute copies of that tape if their child should ever become missing. This is probably why a number of parents who have had their children videotaped at Blockbuster have sent those tapes to Child Shield, U.S.A. ™ for safekeeping. (For the record, we have nothing against Blockbuster, in fact we salute them for their efforts. It's just that we feel that making an Identification Videotape of your child is only one of several steps that all parents should take to safeguard their children.)

What about child I.D. card services, don't they protect kids, too? We really don't consider any program which relies solely on a still photograph to be a viable alternative to our Videotape Registration Service. The photos on I.D. cards are only about one square inch, a size far to small to enlarge clearly enough to be an effective tool for law-enforcement. Besides, we don't think it's logical that a parent should have to pay eight or ten dollars for someone to type out a card with information that nobody would ever forget about their own child (name, age, height, eye color, etc.) Additionally, these cards often include a thumbprint. This is of no real value unless the child is first recovered to see if the prints match. Sadly, this form of identification often ends up being used to identify a corpse, rather than helping reunite a living child with his parents.
